Tottenham star hailed for role in booking Wales World Cup spot

Viewers of Wales’ game against Ukraine on Sunday night flocked to social media, to praise a key member of the former’s backline.

Robert Page’s men, of course, were back a short time ago.

In the country’s biggest outing for some time, the Dragons hosted the aforementioned Ukraine, aware that a place at this year’s Qatar World Cup was on the line.

And, in the end, securing their place at the most prestigious tournament in international football is precisely what Wales have done.

Although the Ukrainian visitors created a handful of presentable chances in front of goal, the hosts on Saturday held on, eventually emerging down the right side with a 1-0 scoreline.

The telling moment of the game came at the end of the first half, when Gareth Bale’s whipped free kick was returned into his own net by hapless Andriy Yarmolenko.

‘Colossus’

In truth, however, it was the efforts of the Welsh stars at the other end of the pitch that really made the difference in keeping a still dangerous Ukraine side at bay.

Wayne Hennessey was in inspired form between positions throughout, with Liverpool talent Neco Williams also enjoying an unforgettable outing.

The Dragons’ standout performer, however, undoubtedly came in the form of Tottenham defender Ben Davies.

The versatile full-back settled to the left of Rob Page’s third back in Cardiff and completely dominated the 90 minutes, once again displaying his remarkable growth since Antonio Conte’s arrival in north London at the end from last year.

In turn, the reaction on social media has since been an absolute sight to behold, with just a few of the highlights featured below:
