Tottenham Hotspur have emerged as favorites to sign Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence, amid competition from Premier League rivals and former side Nottingham Forest.

Spence spent the season on loan with Forest, helping them to promotion with 42 Championship appearances during his season in the Midlands. Out of contract in 2024, he looks certain to leave Middlesbrough this summer, who are set to make a significant profit on the man they added on a free transfer from Fulham four years ago.

It seems unlikely that Spence will want to return to Championship football once again, having enjoyed the promotion’s success. Everything points to estrangement.

And, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, it is Antonio Conte and Tottenham who are currently paving the way for the Englishman, in a deal that could be worth up to £20million.

Speaking to Caught Offside, the Italian revealed that “Djed Spence has already received many important approaches from clubs for next season since March”.

Nottingham Forest are “still trying to find a deal with Middlesbrough to have Spence in the Premier League”, but at present Tottenham are the defender’s “favorites”.

Could Adama be another option?

If Tottenham wanted a more experienced winger, they could reignite their interest in Adama Traore. Barcelona have confirmed they won’t exercise their option to buy the Spaniard, who spent half a season on loan at Camp Nou after arriving in January.

With just 12 months left on his current contract at Molineux, and showing no signs of signing a new one, he could be a cut-price alternative should Spence prove difficult to convince.
