James Milner has turned down offers from two of his former clubs to sign an additional one-year contract at Anfield, according to reports.

The 36-year-old midfielder was out of contract in the summer but agreed to stay on for a further season under Jurgen Klopp following their two-trophy season.

“I’m very happy to stay for another season,” the veteran revealed. “I never took playing for this club for granted and I never will.”

“An overriding feeling for me – and vitally important in the process – was the belief that I could still contribute to the team,” he continued. “The gaffer was clear about what he was thinking and that was a big factor for me to extend my contract.”

“As long as I can still play my role, it’s not something easy to walk away from.”

Clubs refused to secure Merseyside future

According to Goal.com, Aston Villa and Newcastle were both interested in adding the England international to their side, only for Milner to end up turning down his former sides in favor of a stay at Anfield.

In doing so, he opted against a reunion with Steven Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho at Villa Park, as well as a return to St James Park, when there were also reportedly offers from MLS.

However, as Milner has said himself, he clearly considers himself more than capable of continuing to play at the highest level for at least 12 months despite his age, and he will hope to add to his 289 appearances for the Reds.
