Real Madrid demand answers from UEFA after Champions League final chaos

Real Madrid issued a statement on Friday June 3 following the chaos of the 2021/22 Champions League final.

Los Blancos and Liverpool faced off at the Stade de France on May 28, with Madrid picking up a 1-0 victory on the day.

The encounter, which was due to start at 8pm UK time, did not start until around 8.40pm due to what UEFA said were “security reasons”.

Videos have since emerged of many fans channeled into small passageways and tear gassed by French police.

After the match, the French authorities tried to blame Liverpool fans for the trouble, with French Interior Minister GĂ©rald Darmanin saying: “It is clear – all the notes from the security services say so – that the people of Liverpool pose public order problems”

Now, however, Madrid have joined Liverpool in demanding answers for the mishandling of the final.

Their statement, released on Friday, read: “In light of the unfortunate events that took place on May 28 in the vicinity and access points of the Stade de France, and even inside the stadium itself, Real Madrid CF would like to express the following in defense of our fans, who were victims of these events:

1.- We would like to know the reasons that led to choosing this place to host the final and the criteria used, taking into account the experiences of the day.

2.- In addition, we call for answers and explanations to determine those responsible for leaving fans abandoned and helpless. Fans who generally showed exemplary conduct at all times.

“We believe that something that should have been a wonderful football festival for all the fans who attended the game quickly turned into a series of unfortunate events that caused a sense of outrage around the world.

“As evidenced by revealing images released by the media, several fans were violently attacked, harassed, assaulted and robbed. These events continued as they traveled in their car or bus, raising concerns for their physical well-being. Some fans even had to spend the night in the hospital due to injuries.

“Football has conveyed to the world an image far removed from the values and goals it should pursue.

“Our fans and supporters deserve a response and those responsible must be held accountable so that events like these are eradicated from football and sport in general.”
