Newcastle United have announced the permanent £15m capture of Matthew Targett from Aston Villa after a successful loan move for the second half of the campaign.

The Magpies enjoyed a solid end to the season, with Targett making 16 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side in that span as they climbed into the top half of the table, having been in the relegation zone at Christmas.

And, in a bid to bolster their squad over the summer, Eddie Howe has made Targett his first addition as he looks to push for the next European football campaign. More are set to follow, with speculation continuing to link the Tyneside side with another left-back in the form of Atletico Madrid’s Renan Lodi.

They are also expected to add a striker, centre-back and central midfielder, while they have also been linked with a goalkeeper in the form of Dean Henderson.

What Target said

Speaking to the media following his move, Targett explained how easy the decision was to make and how happy he was to write his future at Newcastle.

“I am absolutely delighted to sign a four-year contract with this club,” said the Englishman. “For me it was an easy decision to make the loan permanent after the reception I’ve had from my fellow players, staff, supporters and owners, so I’m really happy to be here.”

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe added: “Matt had a fantastic impact after being loaned out in January and was instrumental in some great team performances.

“He’s a big lad and a top professional who undoubtedly makes us stronger, so I’m delighted he sees his future here.”
