Newcastle United close in on second target despite late interest from Manchester United

Newcastle United are closing in on signing Sven Botman from Lille, despite interest from AC Milan and a late approach from Manchester United.

That’s according to English newspaper The Telegraph, which claim Botman could be Eddie Howe’s second signing this summer after he failed to complete the deal in January despite widespread interest.

Since then, it looked like Italy and AC Milan would be his destination, but that seems less likely as the weeks drag on, and the report suggests it could be a matter of time before he is. in black and white. stripes this summer.

“The fight between Newcastle and the new Italian champions has yet to be won – and Milan officials could still move to sabotage the plan – but there is a growing sense of confidence within St James’ Park that the centre-back will decide to move from France to Tyneside,” they claim.

Botman would become the second addition to the Magpies after the permanent signing of Matt Targett, who spent the second half of last season on loan with the Tyneside side.

They are also expected to add a striker and central midfielder, while they have also been linked with a goalkeeper in the form of Dean Henderson.

Manchester United: Too little, too late?

Reports of interest from Manchester United were highlighted earlier this week, with the Red Devils looking puzzled over defensive reinforcements as the rumor mill continues to swirl at Old Trafford.

Jurrien Timber looks set to stay at Ajax, and while Pau Torres and Goncalo Inacio have been linked, there’s little concrete in either deal at the moment. Suggestions of interest in Botman couldn’t be far from the truth then, with the defender having already attracted interest from top clubs and rising through the ranks at Ajax before his move to Lille.

However, given that the other two teams in the race have been working on a deal for months, they may have abandoned any approach too late.
