Newcastle set to beat Manchester United against French teenager in deal worth up to €35m

Newcastle United are set to beat Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund to the signing of teenage sensation Hugo Ekitike this summer, according to widespread reports.

The French striker was close to signing the 19-year-old in January, only for Ekitike to opt to stay in France with Reims for the remainder of the campaign. Around this time, he also caught the eye of European giants Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, both looking for new strikers.

Despite the late onslaught of interest, however, it appears the newly wealthy Magpies have continued to lead the race for his signature, with trusted transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claiming the teenager has agreed a five-year deal with Eddie Howe’s team.

And, according to the Daily Mail, the clubs are in discussions over a potential fee which could reach €35m with add-ons included.

Europe is calling you?

After enjoying such a strong end to the 2021/22 season, the next step for the Magpies must be a boost for Europe. They will, however, be far from alone. As well as the traditional ‘top six’, West Ham and Leicester City are likely to strengthen, while Aston Villa have already completed three new additions under Steven Gerrard and Brighton appear to be on an upward trajectory.

This means that, unlike Manchester City, Newcastle United will not be able to shoot straight up.
