Leicester City defender Jannick Vestergaard has confirmed he will stay at the King Power Stadium this summer, despite a poor first season under Brendan Rodgers.

The Danish defender joined the club from fellow Premier League side Southampton following Wesley Fofana’s horrific pre-season injury, forcing the Foxes back into the market for cover.

And, despite making 7 appearances in Leicester’s first 9 Premier League games, he was soon dropped on the bench, his last start for the club being in mid-January.

However, that hasn’t changed the 29-year-old’s plans for the future, with the Dane telling reporters he intends to stay put this season despite reports suggesting otherwise.

“I have no intention of leaving Leicester this summer. My intention is definitely to play more next season, and I’m sure I’ll be ready for the World Cup in Qatar,” he revealed. “I will be fully motivated when I return to pre-season with Leicester.”

“Obviously it’s important to play games, but the last two months without playing haven’t made me another player,” he continued. “On the contrary, I am in better physical shape at the moment and therefore I feel more comfortable on the pitch than six months ago.

“It was difficult to come straight from that unforgettable Euro experience, which was also mentally and physically exhausting, to a new club without any pre-season, and I was affected by both different injuries and illnesses at the during my first months at the club.’

Leicester ready for a busy summer?

Although Leicester City’s targets this summer are still unclear, it looks like they could focus on central midfield.

Youri Tielemans and summer signing Boubacary Soumare are set to leave Midlands ahead of the 22/23 season, and the Foxes will need replacements even though Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall appears to be looking the part.

They will be boosted by the absence of European football, but will nonetheless need to freshen up a squad that has often looked tired and scrappy in the last campaign.
