Honduras vs. Canada

With disputes off the field, at least on the ice, for now, Canada’s preparations for the World Cup can begin.

The Canucks returned to action on Thursday night, kicking off this Nations League campaign by hammering Curacao 4-0 at Vancouver.

Alphonso Davies scored a brace as he returned to BC Place while Steven Vitória and then Lucas Cavallini were also on target.

This means, including qualifying, that Canada have now won eight of nine Nations League matches, scoring 32 goals and conceding just five.

Three years ago, the Reds missed out on the Nations League final, finishing below the United on goal difference.

This time, having already qualified for Canada’s first World Cup since 1986, John Herdman’s side are confident of dominating this section.

Honduras made the first Nations League final in Denver last summer, losing 1-0 to the United States in the semi-finals.

They have already played twice in this group, first beating Curaçao in Willemstad but then suffering a 2-1 loss at home to the minnows in the group.

La H qualified for the 2010 and 2014 World Cups but, in that cycle, finished bottom of the octagon, losing 14 of 18 games, winning none.

Given that the home side have won just one of their last 22 competitive outings, Canada are big favorites to leave the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano victorious.

Guatemala vs Dominican Republic

Can either of these two teams keep pace with group leaders French Guinea?

Guatemala were forced into the bottom tier of the Nations League in 2019, duly winning all four games, scoring 25 goals and conceding none.

So Luis Fernando Tena’s side were aiming for back-to-back promotions but, halfway through, it doesn’t quite go to plan.

Los Chapines lost 2-0 to French Guinea in their first group game before bouncing back by beating Belize 2-0 three days later.

However, on Friday night, Guatemala lost further ground in the race for first place, drawing 1-1 in the Dominican Republic.

Nowend Lorenzo put the hosts ahead at the Estadio Olímpico Félix Sánchez with Oscar Santis equalizing soon after.

With these two teams facing off again, will there be a winner this time around?

The Dominican Republic, similarly, beat wrestlers Belize before losing to French Guinea ahead of that double-header with Guatemala.

Los Quisqueyanos finished third in their League B group three years ago, meaning they have never qualified for a Gold Cup in 13 attempts.

The winners of this group will qualify for the 2023 edition while the runners-up will advance to the preliminary round.

With promotion and Gold Cup qualification up for grabs, who will claim three vitally important points at the Estadio Doroteo Guamuch Flores?

Trinidad and Tobago vs Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Will Trinidad and Tobago continue their promotion to the Nations League with a second victory in four days against Saint Vincent and the Grenadines?

On Friday night, these two teams faced off at Arnos Vale with T&T winning 2-0; Neveal Hackshaw then Levi García on target.

It means the Soca Warriors have six points to their name, coming off a surprising 2-1 loss to Nicaragua and a 1-0 win over the Bahamas.

Trinidad and Tobago were relegated from the top tier of the Nations League in 2019, failing to win any of their games against Honduras and Martinique.

Subsequently, this former CONCACAF powerhouse was knocked out in the first round of World Cup qualifiers by St. Kitts and Nevis.

Thus, Angus Eve’s task is to bring T&T back to the top of the region, starting with promotion and qualification for the Gold Cup.

With Nicaragua a point clear, these two meet on the final day of March, it’s simply a win for the hosts.

Meanwhile, St. Vincent and the Grenadines are in a relegation battle given they have just one solitary point to their name.

Although it happened against Nicaragua a week ago with Azinho Solomon and Oalex Anderson on target in a 2-2 draw.

The Vincy Heat haven’t qualified for a Gold Cup since 1996, losing last summer in the preliminary round to Haiti in Fort Lauderdale.

Despite winning three of six League B fixtures in 2019, losing just once, Kendale Mercury’s side are finding victories much harder to come by this year.

The home side are expected to take the required win at Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Nicaragua v Bahamas

Just three days after their clash in Nassau, Nicaragua and the Bahamas find themselves in Managua.

In the first episode on Friday night, Nicaragua were just too strong, winning 2-0 thanks to goals from Jaime Moreno and Matías Moldskred.

Will this one witness a similar result?

All in all, La Azul y Blanco will be very happy with how the first half of this campaign has gone.

They beat heavyweights Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 before a disappointing 2-2 draw against St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Nonetheless, Marco Antonio Figueroa’s side currently sit top of Group C, aiming for promotion to League A and guaranteed qualification for the Gold Cup.

Meanwhile, the Bahamas are simply looking to stay in the second tier of the Nations League.

Since beating St. Vincent 1-0 on Matchday 1, Lesly St. Fleur converting a penalty, they have lost both games, 1-0 at Trinidad and then 2-0 on Friday.

The Baha Boyz were unbeaten in this competition in 2019, earning promotion from League C, so they will be delighted to find themselves in their current position of third.

The hosts should have way too much quality at the Estadio Nacional de fútbol de Nicaragua.
