Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali has played down Arsenal’s interest in his side’s prodigious forward Gianluca Scammaca, saying there is nothing concrete at any club for the young striker at the moment.

The 23-year-old enjoyed a solid season in green and black even as his side could only manage mid-table, scoring 16 times in 36 Serie A outings.

And, in Arsenal’s pursuit for a striker, his name was regularly mentioned in the media across Italy and England, with rumors that a bid had even been made and rejected for the Italian striker.

However, speaking to Sky Sports (and relayed by Fabrizio Romano), Carnevali clarified that nothing had yet been pushed beyond informal talks.

“There is nothing concrete for Scamacca yet, just some contacts with some clubs,” he revealed.

“Of course, after playing with the national team, the interest is growing now”

It is not known who these clubs are, although Inter Milan is not thought to work on any deal for the Italian at present, despite rumors suggesting otherwise.

Meanwhile, Scamacca himself has claimed he’s not reading speculation about his future, instead focusing on what’s happening on the pitch.

“I don’t read these things. Only the pitch matters. The numbers are dialed by the clubs. For me, the pitch and the fun matter,” he admitted.

Arsenal wary of Locatelli repeat

Mikel Arteta and Edu have taken this route before.

The Gunners have been used by Italian players and clubs to secure better deals in consecutive windows. In January, they pushed hard for Dusan Vlahovic which finally saw the Serb get his dream transfer to Juventus.

And they have precedents with Sassuolo. Last summer, after impressive performances with Italy at Euro 2020, they chased Manuel Locatelli out.

“Arsenal have made an official offer for Locatelli,” Carnevali told Sky Sport Italia last August. “They’re pushing hard to sign Manuel and it’s an important offer. We’ll see.’

However, at the end of the transfer window, Locatelli found himself at Juventus, on a two-year loan with an obligation to buy. Given the rarity of seeing Italians in the Premier League, they must be wary of letting history repeat itself a third time.
