Arsenal confirm Brazilian striker as first signing of the summer

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of 19-year-old Brazilian Marquinhos as they seek to repeat their trick of Gabriel Martinelli, with the teenager signing a ‘long-term contract’ at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners are set to have another busy summer after their failure to secure the latest Champions League football campaign, with suggestions they may be willing to continue their £150million spending spree last summer with a spend similar this time around.

The likes of Gabriel Jesus and Youri Tielemans have both been heavily linked with a move to north London, but the first signing is clearly a look to the future rather than an attempt to directly improve first XI Marquinhos n having made only 33 Brazilian championships. An apparition.

In a statement, the club revealed:

“The young striker, who has represented Brazil at Under-16 and Under-17 level, will travel to London from Brazil in the coming weeks to join his new team-mates for pre-season training. “

Transfer director Edu added: “We are delighted to have completed the transfer with Sao Paulo, because Marquinhos was a player we had been watching for some time. At 19 he is still very young, it is therefore a player of the future. We look forward to Marquinhos joining us now for pre-season, settling into his new home and continuing to grow and develop with us.

What role will Marquinhos play at Arsenal?

As mentioned above, the Sau Paulo striker is expected to be given a chance to show his qualities during the pre-season, which officially starts on June 27. If he excels, he could well be included in the first team in the same way Gabriel Martinelli was when he moved to north London.

However, he looks more likely at present to feature in the U23s for the foreseeable future, while possibly featuring in Cup games and Europa League games.
