Will Nigeria score six out of six points to start the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers?

On Thursday night, the Super Eagles fought back with one goal to beat Sierra Leone 2-1 in Abuja.

Alex Iwobi equalized at home before star striker Victor Osimhen proved the match winner at Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

In March, Nigeria failed to qualify for the World Cup, losing to rivals Ghana on away goals, so they will miss the tournament for only the second time since 1990.

Since then, José Peseiro has taken over as head coach, tasked with winning the AFCON next summer and ultimately qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

Before the start of AFCON qualifying, the Super Eagles played two friendlies for the state side, losing 2-1 to Mexico and then 1-0 to Ecuador.

But these are the games where points are at stake, so will Nigeria prove too strong in Agadir?

São Tomé and Príncipe are the lowest-ranked team to reach this stage of qualifying, ousting Mauritius in a play-off earlier this year.

On Thursday, despite a shocking lead through Eba Viegas, they were eventually beaten 5-1 by Guinea-Bissau.

In total, São Tomé and Príncipe have won just eight of 43 competitive matches, meaning Adriano Eusébio’s men are rank underdogs here.

Anything other than a healthy Nigeria victory would be a major surprise.

This may be Liberia’s home game, but it’s actually in Casablanca; either way, Morocco should sail to victory.

The Atlas Lions won their one and only AFCON title in 1976, facing their Egyptian rivals in the quarter-finals earlier this year.

However, in November they will make their sixth World Cup appearance after demolishing DR Congo in the March play-offs.

So, unpopular head coach Vahid Halilhodžić is using these June internationals to prepare for games against Croatia, Belgium and Canada.

On Thursday, Morocco came from a goal down to beat South Africa 2-1 at Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in their first group game.

Youssef En-Nesyri equalized, before Ayoub El Kaabi snatched the winner in the 88th minute from Rabaṭ.

So now, will the Atlas Lions make it two out of two wins in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers?

Well, it seems likely that they’ll take on Liberia’s minnows group in this one.

The Lone Stars have not qualified for an AFCON since 2002, when the country’s current president, George Weah, was in front.

But, with Zimbabwe having been disqualified, all they need to do to end that streak is finish above perennial underachievers South Africa.

These two will face off twice in September and those matches will essentially decide who qualifies, almost certainly below Morocco.

Here, the rated away side are expected to ride to victory at Stade Mohammed V.

Sierra Leone vs Guinea-Bissau

Will Guinea-Bissau win two out of two in this African Cup of Nations qualifying campaign?

Thursday, the Djurtus came out from a goal to hammer the minnows of the São Tomé and Príncipe group 5-1 in Agadir.

Alfa Semedo equalized before Zinho Gano netted a brace and then Zidane Banjaqui and Jorginho took the win.

Guinea-Bissau have qualified for each of the last three African Cups of Nations, failing to reach any of the nine editions they have previously appeared in.

Nonetheless, given their recent success, Baciro Candé’s side are expected to finish in the top two of this group and make it four in a row.

Sierra Leone meanwhile were beaten 2-1 by the heavyweights of the Nigerian group in Abuja on Thursday, taking a shock lead through Jonathan Morsay.

The Leone Stars have ended their 26-year wait for a CAN appearance in January, holding the Algerian and Ivorian heavyweights to a draw.

If they want to play back-to-back qualifiers, Sierra Leone will need to finish ahead of Guinea-Bissau, which is what makes this clash so important.

Will there be a winner at the General Lansana Conté Stadium?
